Close Up on Cleobury

Rosemary Webb Rehill Ah Hems the butcher. It's still Hems. Dad went in there every day to buy meat. Next door used to be a grocery store. Barrets?? or something like that.

Trev Teasdel There was a little record shop just off photo.

Texas Dave McGarry Trust you to remember that Trev!

Rosemary Webb Rehill Before it was Copes, it was Tongues. They went to church at Mawley but he dropped dead and they sold the business.

Trev Teasdel  The record shop was a poky little place but I think I bought Marianne Faithfull there (well her first record anyway!).

Lower Street from Station Road, Junction with New Road

Rosemary Webb Rehill  Lordy, I remember when that was built...

Rosemary Webb Rehill  Used to be grocery store on the right owned by Johnny Downs.

Keith Ison  I think they had a daughter called Suzanne

Rosemary Webb Rehill  I was friendly with his daughter, June

Keith Ison  I don't remember June, just Suzanne

The Bell Inn

Rosemary Webb Rehill We stayed there for one night! It was AWFUL!! LOL

Lauri Lindsay Loved going to the Talbot on parents day. Did I hear that it burnt down ?

Trev Teasdel  Wow that chimney - God's straw! (Well he must need a pint sometimes with all that goes on in the world!).

Michael Billings  Just to the right of the pub between the two cars was the sweet shop i mentioned earlier. It's now a private house but still retains the original bow window.

Michael Billings The Wells was just before the pub. There was an incline down to them.

Rosemary Webb Rehill  I believe the sweet shop was Mrs.Hoppers? It was right by the Wells and the Fountain Pub. I remember going in there as a child.

Rosemary Webb Rehill  Another brilliant photo! The shop to the left was a shoe shop when I was a child.

Barkers Lane

The Old Lion

Rosemary Webb Rehill  To the right was where Dr.Stanbury had his office. I remember going there for my small pox vaccination.

Rosemary Webb Rehill  That's still the same. We went in last summer and Tom, one of the workers remembered us and dad. He works in the back and he's really ancient. Barbara and Basil Mumford still live in Cleobury.

Trev Teasdel  The Kings Arms - lunch on visiting day.

Rosemary Webb Rehill  We stayed at the Kings Arms last summer, it was really nice.

  2. Hi karen, I think the Cleobury Mortimer History society may be able to help you. they are currently doing a survey on the history of all the properties in the High Street. Their website is http://www.cleoburymortimerhistory.co.uk/ and they meet monthly at Neen Savage Parish Hall. next meeting this weds 19th Oct 7.30. I'm sure they would welcome your input. You can contact them via the site or attend their meeting. I will also ask Rosemary Webb whose father was the Bursar at the boarding school as she remembers it when it was the Doctor's house. Best Trevor
